February is Black History Month. Throughout the year, but especially during this month, we celebrate Black achievement with stories, presentations, and discussions. Tar Beach is an allegorical tale full of symbolic and historical references central to African-American culture. Award-winning author Faith Ringgold inspires us to take flight, like her protagonist Cassie Louise Lightfoot, to hope, dream, and use our imaginations to transcend above our world and achieve desired freedom.
