Overview

Second grade is a magical year. Seven and eight-year-olds are now advancing in reading and writing, capable of critical thinking, curious about the world around them, and full of wonder as new concepts are introduced and new skills are applied. In our class, we focus every day on the importance of our classroom community, and we celebrate each otherโ€™s contributions to making our learning environment a safe and positive place to share ideas, collaborate, and succeed.ย

Throughout the year, some of the special projects include passports and clay maps for our world travels, pumpkin projects, holiday traditions, Chinese New Year celebration, the 100th day of school, animal research reports, and our aloha virtual field trip. In the second half of the year, we embark upon our book writing project as we turn our classroom into a publishing company and conclude with a publishing party where students share their completed works with their families and special friends.ย  Field trips support our science, art, music, and social studies curriculum.ย

All year, we have frequent morning meetings and group activities. We close every day with student contributions to our classroom kindness jar as we recognize and celebrate those who have spread kindness throughout our school community.ย
